The story behind the brand
Hugo started his first clothing factory in a small town south of Stuttgart called Metzingen in 1924. He was soon bankrupt due to the economic climate in Germany at the time, but managed to reach an agreement with his creditors leaving him with six machines to start again. His son took it forward making work uniforms until they received an order for suits in 1950, and within ten years the company was mass producing off the peg suits. Two grandsons Jochen and Uwe took over the running of the brand in 1970 and launched it into a worldwide market. At this stage the company started a long association with motorsport sponsoring formula one’s Nikki Lauda and then the McLaren racing team. In the 1980’s they continued their close sporting connection by sponsoring golf’s Bernhard Langer and the Davis cup for tennis. Just after this in 1989 they launched their first sunglass collection.
